Bake

MeaningWe use this word to cook food such as bread or cake in an oven using dry heat as in microwave oven.

ExampleWe will bake few cakes for his birthday party.

Barbecue

Meaningto roast or broil meat, chicken or fish over hot coals or an open fire.

ExampleWe barbecued fish and ribs last Sunday and enjoyed a lot.

Bite

Meaningto cut food item by teeth to eat like cookies or sandwich

ExampleHe bit the cookie in half. She ate the sandwich in four quick bites.

Bitter

Meaninga strong and unpleasant flavor or something too much sour

ExampleThese almonds are very bitter.

Bland

Meaninglacking strong flavor and having no good or original taste

Example: This vegetable soup is very bland. It does not taste well.

Buffet

MeaningBuffet is a meal with serving counter having multiple dishes in meal. It is normally served in restaurants and inns.

ExampleWe went to a Turkish buffet and enjoyed a good meal.

Creamy

Meaning: food made from cream or tasting like cream

ExampleI would like to take a creamy peanut butter.

Crispy

Meaningfood that is dry and easily broken

ExampleFry the potato chips until they are crispy and brown.

Crunchy

Meaninga type of food with hard texture and making a loud sound when chewed under teeth

ExampleThe peanut cookies were crunchy.

Dessert

Meaninga sweet course normally served at the end of the meal.

Example:  I do not like desserts in dinner but I am crazy for desserts in breakfast.

Pudding

Meaning: A thick soft and creamy food usually made from rice, eggs or bread that people eat normally cold and served in meal as desserts.

ExampleIn Pakistan, pudding is served as a dessert after meal.

Fish

Meaning: meat of salt-water fish / sea fish or fresh water fish

ExampleWe barbequed fish at dinner on last Sunday.

Fried

Meaningsomething cooked in oil in a frying pan

ExampleMy son is crazy for fried potatoes chips.

Game

Meaning: meat of wild animals like rabbit, hare, partridge, pheasant etc

Example: Game birds are those birds those are legally allowed to hunt.

Grill

Meaningto cook, fry or toast food direct over hot surface over fire

ExampleDuring the summer, we grill meat outside usually.

Gulp down

Meaningto swallow or eat very quickly in large quantity

ExampleHe gulped down the pizza in four bites.

Guzzle

Meaningto drink something very quickly or greedily and in large amount

ExampleHe guzzled a glass of water after he finished the job.

Loaf

Meaninga piece of bread or cake

ExampleI ate one loaf of bread in breakfast. 

Lump

Meaninga small piece or amount of something

ExamplePut of a lump of cream on top of the casserole to make the cake creamy.

Red Meat

Meaning: meet of lamb, pork or beef

Example: In Pakistani culture, people cook red meat mostly in wedding parties.

Microwave

Meaningto make something heat up in microwave oven.

ExampleMicrowave the sandwich for two minutes and eat.

Mild

Meaningnot strong or harsh in taste

ExampleThe taste of these spices is very mild. 

Overcooked

Meaningsomething cooked for more time than required

Example Overcooking made these potato chips crunchier. 

Pan-fried

Meaning: fried in a frying pan

Example Would you like a piece of fish fried in frying pan?

Pint

Meaning: a unit of measuring liquid

ExampleShe drank a pint of ale at the bar

Poach

Meaning: This word is used commonly (in food and cooking vocabulary) to cook in boiling liquid.

Example I prefer to poach eggs in breakfast.

Portion

Meaninga quantity of food taken during male

ExampleHave you eaten your portion of desserts?

Poultry

Meaning: (“white meat”) meet of chicken, turkey, goose or duck

ExamplePoultry is cheap than red meat.

Pour

Meaning: to put some liquid into something like glass, cup, jug etc

ExamplePour the cola over ice cubes and taste it. 

Raw

Meaningvegetables or food in natural state

Example Salad is made from raw vegetables. 

Ripe

Meaning: fruits or vegetable those are fully-grown and ready to eat.

Example Make sure the apples are ripe so we can use them in the juice.

Rotten

Meaningrotted or decayed food that is not able to eat

Example This fish smells rotten; throw it away.

Roast

Meaningto cook something with dry heat in an oven or over a fire

ExampleLet us put chicken in the oven and roast for one hour.

Salty

Meaninghaving a quantity of salt in it

ExampleThe potato chips were a bit salty and crispy.

Sip

Meaningto drink in small quantity (to suck liquid by air into mouth)

ExampleIt is best to sip a coffee rather than gulp it down at once.

Snack

Meaninga small amount of food eaten between meals

ExampleI eat snack at four o clock usually.

Sour

Meaninghaving an acid taste like lemon

ExampleThe milk had turned very sour.

Shake

MeaningMove something forth and backward quickly to mix its ingredients.

ExampleShake the juice well and pour into a glass.

Starter / appetizer 

Meaning: the first thing eaten as part of a meal

Example: People usually prefer salad and drinks as starter in their meal.

Stir

MeaningThis term is used in food and cooking vocabulary for to mix something with spoon or stick making a circular movement

ExampleStir the sugar well and enjoy juice with your favorite lunch. 

Steam

Meaningsomething placed in steam vapors before cooking (Steamed cooked over a saucepan of boiling water)

ExampleThe easy way to cook many vegetables is to steam them before cooking for few minutes.

Stir-fried

Meaningto fry something over high heat while being stirred continuously

ExampleUsually I take stir-fried eggs in breakfast.

Stewed

Meaningsomething cooked for a long time on a low heat

ExampleStewed foods are easy to digest.

Tasteless

Meaningfood that does not has a good taste

ExampleThe meat has been cooked for too long. It‘s tasteless.

Tough

Meaningfood with hard texture, difficult to chew

ExampleThe cookie was very tough. I could hardly chew it!

Unripe

Meaningvegetables or fruits those are not full-grown and not ready to eat or cook and picked before their ripen time

Example Oranges and bananas are picked unripe mostly and become ripe as they are shipped.


Eating and Drinking Vocabulary:

Nibble

Meaning: Eat slowly and gently with small bites.

Example: She nibbled some cheese and crackers before lunch

Graze

Meaning: You will find this word in eating and drinking vocabulary very common that expresses to eat small portion of the food throughout the whole day.

Example: Jam was grazing on chips all noon

Bite

Meaning: To hold and cut some piece of food with teeth directly to eat. You can use this word for such food items that can be hold in hand and keep enough size to put in mouth to cut it with front teeth like pizza, sandwich, cookie, cake, etc.

Example: She gulped the pizza in few bites

Munch

Meaning: To chew something in a noisy way

Example: She is munching snacks.

Scarf

Meaning: To eat something in a hungry way

Example: She scarfed down my pizza when I was in washroom.

Devour

Meaning: To eat greedily

Example: She devoured three sandwiches in a while.

Starving

Meaning: Too much hungry

Example: Many NGOs are working to feed starving children in poor regions.

Gulp

Meaning: To eat and swallow some food very quickly and in a large quantity. This word is commonly used in eating and drinking vocabulary.

Example: Zaki told him not to gulp his sandwich.

Swallow

Meaning: To take food into stomach through mouth

Example: Always chew your food well before swallowing it.

Quaff

Meaning: To drink a large amount of (liquid food such as bear, juice) quickly

Example: She quaffed three pint of ale at pub.

Chew

Meaning: To cut food into pieces using teeth before swallowing it

Example: It looks very bad to chew food with open mouth.

Lick

Meaning: to take some food or liquid into mouth with the help of tongue, to touch a tongue on something to get its taste

Example: She licked her fingers after taking meal with hands.

Guzzle

Meaning: to drink some liquid such as bear or ale very quickly and in a large amount, to drink greedily

Example: She guzzled three glass of soda after lunch.

Choke

Meaning: to become unable to breath freely when something like food gets stuck in throat that cause stoppage in breathing

Example: Guzzling a glass of liquor continually can cause choking.

Vomit

Meaning: The liquid or food that comes out from stomach through mouth due to sickness or some other reason.

Example: blood vomiting caused her death.

Munch

Meaning: To chew something in a noisy way, to chew food that causes noise

Example: She was munching cookies during class time.

Masticate

Meaning: to chew food to make it more soften

Example: The goats were masticating their food.

Crunch

Meaning: loud sound of something being crushed under teeth, to chew food with crushing noise

Example: She crunched a packet of crispy chips.

Slurp

Meaning: to drink or eat some food with a sucking sound, a sucking noise while eating or drinking like a sip of tea

Example: Usually many people slurp tea from a cup.

Spit

Meaning: To throw or eject food or something from the mouth, to throw saliva out from mouth as an expression of contempt

Example: She spited the morsel when she observed crunching sound of something from it.

Pig out:

Meaning: eat a lot or eat greedily

Example: She always remains in search of party to pig out some special meal.

Dogs’ breakfast

Meaning: (a slang) an unhealthy and casual meal, expression for disapproval for meal

Example: I asked you to prepare lunch not a dog’s breakfast.

Eat like a bird

Meaning: to eat very little, to eat a small portion of food

Example: She eats like a bird in school parties.

Eat like a horse

Meaning: to eat a lot

Example: He ate like a horse on my wedding party.
